Were all Japanese samurai ?

4th July 2007

I am from Sweden, and even though 90% of the people were peasants it is still popular to claim that we used to be vikings. Guess it is the same here in Japan. Japundit has got an interesting piece on Japanese names:

One amusing aspect of living in Japan is hearing people with names like Tanaka (”in the rice field”), Yamada (”rice field on the mountain”) and Nakamura (”in the village”) argue vehemently that their ancesors were samurai warriors despite their agrarian sounding names.

I think not all Japanese were samurai. Some were fishermen, some were farmers. If everyone were samurai, who grew vegitables and stuff? Maybe all Swedish people could have been vikings because they were able to fish ? I think samurai did not make anything to eat!
      Hur mar dur? :-) :p

I think some 10 % of the Japanese were samurai. Most of them were probably as you say farmers and fishermen.
