The Megamac is back!
1st April 2007
The McD in downtown Yokohama is right next to Tokyu Hands. Ground floor is a hole in the wall cash line. Once ordered and paid you find yourself standing on the side walk with a red tray in your hands.
The seating is upstairs. As I made my way up the stairs I saw some people waiting in line to go up. Come on, I have just been in a line to buy this, now I have to wait again to sit down and eat it? McD in Japan don´t allow people walking around with their trays randomly trying t o find a seat. Oh no, hear it´s all organised. An impeccable female worker that reminded me of an airline stewardess made sure to let people in as others left. I was lucky to be alone so I quickly got a seat by the counter.
First thing I did was to take a photo of the sandwich with my phone. Wait a minute, did anybody see me doing this? A foreigner eating alone and taking pictures of his food? As I peeked to left and right I realised that non of my neighbours at the counter had noticed. The kid to the right had headphones on and was staring at his mobile phone. Both the gentlemen on my left were also preoccupied with, yes, their mobile phones! So Japan is a place where it is perfectly normal to eat a gigantic burger by yourself and photographing it.
Please compare the picture I took of the burger with that from the ad. Normally in Japan the burgers at McD are very good and actually often looks like the picture in the ad. Not this time. The sorry excuse for a sandwich that I found in that box was not a feast for the eye.
I can tell you a little secret. I used to work at McD when I was younger. The first burger that you get fed up with is the Big Mac. It´s something about the sauce that is just not good after a while. Still I couldn´t resist trying the worlds biggest hamburger, but I won´t do it again. Mahalo.
