Akashi-Kaikyo -The worlds largest suspension bridge

10th November 2006

Some things in Japan are well known like the Tokyo tower or the temples in Kyoto. There are also many famous bridges in the world. Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, the Brooklyn bridge in New York or the bridge over the river Kwai to name a few. Now, the worlds largest suspension bridge is right here in Japan. If you are in the Kobe area it is definitively worth a visit.akashi.jpg
Akashi Kaikyo bridge from the Maiko side. 1991 metres center span and 3911 metres total.

akashibridge.jpgWhen taking the train don’t get off at Akashi, use the stop Maiko. At this stop there is easy access to a waterfront walk where you can see the bridge. It’s a nice walk with people fishing from the shore. It is also possible to take a tour of the bridge and to go up in the very tall towers. When I went there I didn’t realise just how spectacular it was going to be there was no time to take the the tour for me. Next time I go there I will surely go up in the towers. There are also ferries crossing the strait. Sounds like a good way to see the bridge too, anybody done that?
