Training for the fight

19th August 2006

In a month there is a competition coming up and I now focus my training on improving my sparring. My boxing has improved but I feel that the overall sparring needs a lot of work. I picked up this technique at YouTube, check it out:

By feinting a low-kick to the thigh you make your opponent guard with a leg cut. With him standing on one leg you simply sweep the other one.

I tried this in sparring yesterday and couldn’t get the technique to work properly. My sparring partners was either to good (brown belts) or to lousy (white belts) for me to be able to pull this off. The brown belts just didn’t fall for it and I couldn’t get the white belts to perform the cut right. Ending up me kicking them on the thigh many times!

As you understand we train in a small group with all types of belts. From beginner to brown. This is mostly a good thing because I learn a lot booth from fighting guys more advanced than me, as well as the ones I clearly dominate. The problem is that I would like more sparring with partners that are exactly at my own level. After each session there is time for independent sparring, and I usually do a few rounds that is very rewarding. However, I am at that time very tired! Promise to work on this trick more next session.
